SEOmoz metrics – Moz Rank, Moz Trust, Page Authority and Domain Authority

Working in the field of online marketing, you are bound to be dependent on the use of metrics and tools which save us a lot of time.

Some of these tools stand out for being practically able to help us with many of our tests & experiments. Today, our focus would be on the established and popular- Moz Rank, Moz Trust, Page Authority, and SEOmoz Domain Authority.

Despite its basic concepts being known by most of its users, there are still questions about how it works?

What is Moz Rank?

The Moz Rank is the main qualitative metric of SEOmoz. Why? Moz Rank has, to some extent, overcome the dependence on Google PageRank as the functionalities of both these ranking tools are almost similar.  Google has been great with updates of PageRank.

The score given by Moz Rank is indicative of the importance of a page and it is based on the popularity of links it receives. This means that the greater the amount of quality links, the higher your Moz Rank, ie, Moz Rank reflects the amount and quality of incoming links. The ideal way to go about would be to receive a high amount of medium-quality links compared to a few high qualities.

Tip: Before investing in quality, you must know that the first point for the evaluation of this score, which ranges from 1 to 10, is working with a number of links. That’s right! Unlike what the theory says, many metrics still consider the number of all links pointing to a website and not just the quality links and Moz Rank also does the same. What does this mean? You can achieve Moz Rank 3 or 4 considering the number of links and thereafter, it becomes difficult to increase the Rank to a higher level.  The reason is that after achieving a certain level of Moz Rank, there are new factors apart from a number of links that are being used for evaluation.  To be precise, after reaching a certain level of Moz Rank 3 or 4, you will have to start struggling for quality links. Metric: mozRank

What it does: It shows the popularity of a webpage.

How it measures: By assigning a score of 1 to 10, where 1 is low and the sky is 10

What is Moz Trust?

Moz Trust Moz Trust is SEOmoz’s global link trust score. The credibility is based on the authority of the link to your site, I’m talking about TLDs, viz. .org, .edu, and .gov. The most interesting fact is that you do not necessarily require a link on any of these authority sites to increase the Moz Trust score. Moz Trust is ascertained by calculating the link distance between a given page and a seeded trust source on the internet.  If you are up to six degrees of separation from the authority site having a high Moz Rank, you can get some value. Be aware of some value! This means that the closer you are to a trusted site, the greater the value received.

Despite not having the same function as Moz Rank, a study has confirmed the benefits of the relationship between these two metrics,i.e. mozRank & Moz  Trust. It was observed that with a greater disparity between the two scores (mR 8.00, mT 2.00), the website was ranking very low in the search engines.  And website with lower disparity (8:00 mR, mT 7.00) was ranking higher in the search engines. It is worth working with a mix of number & quality of links and having objectives previously defined for the number of links that you want to achieve in gold mines.

Curiosity: The MozTrust is based on an algorithm developed by engineers at Yahoo and is very similar to those used by Google and Bing.

Metric: Moz Trust

What it does: It shows how must your page is reliable.

How it measures: By assigning a score of 1 to 10, where 1 is low and the sky is 10

What is Page Authority & Domain Authority?

It’s not worth talking about these two metrics separately because they are directly connected. Page Authority shows the authority of a page, and the Domain Authority shows the authority of a domain.

The goal of both is to show what the potential of a page/domain is to reach the top position in Google SERP and most interestingly, independent of content!  Both Page Authority & Domain Authority are keyword agnostic as it is not based on the content of the webpage or a website.

Metric: Authority Page / Domain Authority

What it does: It shows the ranking potential of your webpage or a website.

How it measures: score of 0 to 100, where 1 is low and 100 is beautiful!

Where can I find these metrics?

You can download the MozBar for Chrome or Firefox on the extension pages of two browsers.
